Stuttgart – Ein Tugendbold sieht anders aus. Asfa-Wossen Asserate, der Großneffe des letzten äthiopischen Kaisers, pflegt ausgesprochen heitere und herzliche Umgangsformen. Auch wenn er den Deutschen mit seinem ersten Buch „Manieren“ ebensolche wieder nahegebracht hat, sieht er sich nicht als Lehrer der Nation. Eines allerdings ist ihm ein Anliegen: der zivilisierte Umgang mit unseren Mitmenschen. Deshalb erinnert der afrikanische Prinz nun an deutsche Tugenden.
Herr Asserate, bei dem Wort Tugend denkt man an Knebelbärte und schmallippige Gouvernanten. Warum glauben Sie uns an etwas so Altmodisches erinnern zu müssen?
Über mehr als hundert Jahre haben die Europäer über afrikanische Untugenden geschrieben. Höchste Zeit, einmal den Spieß herumzudrehen und einen Afrikaner über deutsche Tugenden reden zu lassen. Die deutschen Tugenden kenne ich seit meiner Kindheit, seit ich auf der deutschen Schule in Addis Abeba war. Wenn wir Afrikaner ein europäisches Land sehen, das blüht, das stark ist und in der Welt eine Rolle spielt, dann fragen wir uns, wie konnte dieses Land zu dieser Position gelangen. Wir wollen schließlich lernen, um einmal genauso erfolgreich zu sein. Deutschland steht als Gigant da. Warum? Wenn man genauer hinschaut, stehen hinter diesem Erfolg eben Eigenschaften wie Tüchtigkeit, Fleiß und Verlässlichkeit.

Am deutschen Wesen soll die Welt genesen?
Dieser berüchtigte und durch und durch gestrige Satz hat seinen Schrecken verloren. Mit all seinen Schwächen und Fehlern ist das Deutschland, das seit gut sechzig Jahren existiert, das beste Deutschland, das es jemals gegeben hat. Ich kenne kein demokratischeres Land als die Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

Basiert wirtschaftlicher Erfolg auf Tugenden? Sind es manchmal nicht eher Laster wie Eigennutz, Hochmut, Gier?
Wenn alles redlich wäre, hätten wir viele Probleme nicht, mit denen wir uns heute herumschlagen müssen. Die Egomanie wird immer schlimmer, wie in der Wirtschaft zu sehen ist.

Aber ist der Begriff Tugend noch zeitgemäß? Was muss man sich unter einem tugendhaften Teenager vorstellen?
Jede Generation generiert ihre eigenen Tugenden. Wenn ich in Schulen Vorträge halte, sage ich den jungen Leuten: Lasst euch nicht die Werte eurer Väter aufoktroyieren, macht selber welche. Tugenden müssen immer wieder erneuert werden.

Wie sieht das bei Tugenden wie Trinkfestigkeit, Reinlichkeit oder Tapferkeit aus?
Vor hundert Jahren bedeutete, tapfer zu sein, eigentlich ein Idiot zu sein: mit geschlossenen Augen an vorderster Front zu kämpfen und zu sterben. Damit fängt man heute natürlich nichts mehr an. Tapferkeit heißt, dass man sich nicht duckt, sondern sich der Wahrheit stellt. Zivilcourage ist der zeitgemäße Ausdruck dafür.

Ist das eine deutsche Tugend oder nicht eher ein deutsches Versäumnis?
Darauf kommt es gar nicht an. Zivilcourage gilt wohl in jedem Land als Tugend. Aber sie ist etwas ganz Persönliches, eine Sache des Einzelnen, nicht des Volkes. Die Geschwister Scholl können wir alle beim Namen nennen, ebenso die mutigen Menschen des 20. Juli und die Priester, die für andere in den Tod gegangen sind.

Aber gerade hier würde man doch sagen, dass sich diese Menschen behauptet haben gegen die von zweifelhaften deutschen Tugenden wie Kadavergehorsam und Nibelungentreue infiltrierte Menge.
Wir dürfen nicht immer nur auf die furchtbaren zwölf Jahre des Nationalsozialismus sehen, wenn es um deutsche Tugenden geht. Zivilcourage etwa darf seit dem standhaften Prinzen von Homburg durchaus als deutsche Tugend zählen.

Ist es in einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft hilfreich, sich auf einen tugendbasierten Nationalcharakter zu besinnen?
Die Einwanderer kommen in dieses Land nicht, um die Laster kennenzulernen. Sie kommen in der Regel, weil sie von diesem Land eine hohe Meinung haben; sie wollen sehen, wie das hier funktioniert. Das Wesentliche an einem interkulturellen Austausch ist doch, dass die Menschen voneinander lernen: die Deutschen von den Werten, die die Einwanderer mitbringen, und umgekehrt. Eines ist sicher, die moderne Gesellschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts ist keine des Kampfes der Kulturen wie von Samuel Huntington beschworen, sondern eine der fließenden Übergänge und der gegenseitigen Befruchtung.

Waren Sie nie versucht, auch ein Buch über die deutschen Laster zu schreiben?
Ich wäre dazu der falsche Mensch. Ich kenne die großen Fehler, die in diesem Land gemacht wurden. Ich weiß von den Mühen, die es dieses Volk gekostet hat, die Demokratie zu erlangen. Aber jetzt haben Sie allen Grund, stolz auf sich zu sein. Die Deutschen waren übrigens immer ein Segen für die Menschen, solange sie in sich ruhten. Jedes Mal, wenn sie sich um ihre Identität gesorgt haben und gefragt haben, wer bin ich eigentlich, ist es der Welt schlechtgegangen.

Verstehen Sie sich als konservativ?
Ich bin im Äußerlichen konservativ, das gebe ich zu, was Kleidung angeht oder meinen Einrichtungsgeschmack, vielleicht auch in kulturellen Dingen. Aber politisch sehe ich mich in keiner Weise als konservativ. Ich habe zwei Seelen in meiner Brust, eine deutsche und eine äthiopische. Was Äthiopien angeht, bin ich geradezu ein Revolutionär: Es gibt nichts, was ich von dem heutigen Äthiopien aufrechterhalten oder konservieren wollte. Absolut nichts.

An welcher Tugend fehlt es uns heute wohl am meisten?
Uns allen fehlt es an der schönsten Tugend überhaupt. Das ist die Demut: der Mut zum Dienen, der Mut festzustellen, wer wir wirklich sind. Heute leben wir alle nach dem Motto: Mehr Schein als sein. Wenn ein römischer Triumphator einst in eine Stadt einzog, hatte er einen Sklaven an seiner Seite, der ihm ins Ohr flüsterte: Vergiss nicht, du bist nur ein Sterblicher. Diese Stimme am Ohr, die uns zur Besinnung ruft, haben wir verloren.

Film-maker Nagesh Kukunoor

Kukunoor says, “Don’t play by anyone else’s rules. You should totally believe that what you are doing is right.” The film-maker feels that none of the current crop of movie-makers have anything original to talk about in their films. He points out, “The other day I was telling someone the same thing – the current crop of film-makers are all telling the same stories. Conformism seems to be the order of the day.”

The film-maker who has also made films like Rockford and Hyderabad Blues adds emphatically, “Take a poster of any current film. Replace the title of the film with any other, and no one will be able to tell the difference.”
Sudhir Mishra seemed to echo Kukunoor’s sentiment. He said, “If you are a film-maker, you should be ready with 20 new stories in your head. If your producer does not accept one, dish out another one to him.”

Film-maker Mahesh Bhatt is optimistic that the young short film-makers in the country are gradually trying to think out of the box, and that would become a significant contribution to Indian cinema. He explained, “To me, this alternate medium of cinema is very important. There is a young India who can do it. And I am looking forward to seeing some new kind of cinema from them.”

The Meles ethnic apartheid regime has given a land in western Ethiopia that is the size of the State of Rhodes Island (765,000 hectares) to an Indian corporation named Karuturi Global. Thousands of Ethiopians who used to live and earn their living on the land have been displaced, and a few of them are hired by Karturi at meager salaries.

The photo below shows how the forest in south western Ethiopia is being destroyed to make space for flower farming for export to Europe. When asked about the impact of clearing trees to grow flowers in such a massive scale, Woyanne minister of agriculture Abera Deressa said: We in the Ministry of Agriculture are developing an environmental code of practice for the private sector… We are advising them not to cut trees, they have to manage soil erosion.”

While Interpol makes it clear that its infamousRed Notice list does not function as an international arrest warrant, it does serve the purpose of broadcasting internationally that the person in question is a fugitive and can aide in extradition process.

Assange, who has previously denied the allegations, is rumored to currently be hiding in the United Kingdom, which as of yet has not shown any signs of taking legal action. The @wikileaks Twitter account has remained dormant since news about the release went out.

WikiLeaks Hit By Another Massive DDoS Hacker Attack

WikiLeaks was hit by another massive DDoS attack on Tuesday morning. While access to the site was slowed, WikiLeaks’ decentralized nature makes shutdown more difficult than ever.

Hackers are after WikiLeaks. The controversial site was hit by a sustained distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Tuesday morning. The attack, which briefly made WikiLeaks inaccessible, was directed atcablegate.wikileaks.org–the recently released cache of secret diplomatic cables the organization has been leaking. WikiLeaks was also hit by another denial of service (DoS) attack on Sunday, when the cables were released.

A politically motivated hacker or group of hackers named “th3j35t3r”–“The Jester” in leet–took credit for the Sunday attack. According to a tweet, the site was targeted for “attempting to endanger the lives of our troops, ‘other assets’ & foreign relations.” The Jester’s Twitter feed contains a log of attacks on other sites, most of which are homepages for either jihadist or political Islamist organizations.

According to WikiLeaks, today’s DDoS attack exceeded 10 gigabits per second as of 9 a.m. New York time. This was much more intense than Sunday’s attack, which was a comparatively mild 2-4 gigabits per second. Internet security firm Netcraft investigated today’s DDoS attack as well. Netcraft’s analysis notes that cablegate.wikileaks.org is configured to use three different IP addresses as a load balancer, which still failed to prevent today’s DDoS attack.

WikiLeaks has put multiple safeguards in place to distribute their leaked diplomatic cables. Apart from working with media organizations such as theNew York Times and Der Spiegel, WikiLeaks has embraced every nerd’s favorite: Torrents. The organization has placed a torrent of all their diplomatic cable leaks on the Web.

In order to cope with the DDoS attack on Sunday, WikiLeaks did someimprovised DNS jiggering. The site redirected DNS configurations from their Swedish host to cloud sites hosted by Amazon.com in Ireland and the United States.

Interestingly, detailed analyses and walkthroughs of past DDoS attacks on WikiLeaks have been posted to the web. Anthony Freed of Infosec Island interviewed the Jester in February, who described a script he used called XerXes for a past attack:

“Okay it started with a little script I wrote a while back to harden-test servers […] I modified this script, and it was just a nasty script, very cumbersome. When I realized the extent of the jihad online recruiting and co-ordination involvement (much later), I realized I could turn this script into a weapon. […] XerXes requires no zombie network or botnet to be effective. Once a single attacking machine running XerXeS has smacked down a box, it’s down, there is no need for thousands of machines. But, XerXeS does not hurt intermediary nodes along its path to the target. So the answer is that such institutions’ systems would still be intact, as it causes no collateral damage, just not functional.”

It is important to remember two key things, however:

• Today’s DdoS attack was highly complex. Although the timing did not significantly affect access to WikiLeaks from North America, it was timed to make it inaccessible to Europe for much of the business day.
• DdoS attacks on WikiLeaks are great for agitprop and publicity, but do nothing to inhibit the site’s operations. The organization’s bread and butter for information dissemination are the traditional media, bloggers and day-to-day communication between individuals in person and online–not their website. Furthermore, torrents make a nifty backup plan.

Meanwhile, China is fighting WikiLeaks the traditional way: through the Great Firewall. China formally announced they are blocking access to WikiLeaks today, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei noting that “China takes note of the government reports. We hope the U.S. Side will handle the relevant issues. […] As for the content of the documents, we will not comment on that.”
